Great Screen - Great Fratures - Some Quirks
Having been a Garmin owner for about 5 years I had no doubt what brand I was going to buy, my old Garmin served me well but it was time for a new one and the wide screen was a key feature I wanted in my new one.The screen is impressive, while going from 4.3" to 5" does not sound like much it is really amazing how much more map and information that fits well on the screen. The screen itself is anti-glare that works, and very bright if you want it, I have the brightness at 60% and that is fine even in bright sunlight. The images are very crisp and clear, street names and such are auto-sized to not obstruct the map but big enough to read easily. The volume when it is reading out direction is also outstanding, so loud I have it also on 60%. So a solid 5 Stars on the screen and voice volume, as well as the pronunciation of the street names!Quirk: When I first got it I was in my office and opened it, plugged it in to just power and fired it up, it kept asking for me...
Garmin Nuvi 1490LMT - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
*** UPDATE at the bottom of this review (February 2012)***Background - I own a lot of technology. I like electronic toys and I indulge myself in whatever the latest gadget is. This has given me a broad taste in different segments of gadgets, and a pretty good eye for what works and what does not work. Some convergence works but to date, most just plain suck (January 2011). Prime example of poor convergence is my iPhone 4 and Apple App Store GPS software like Navigon, Garmin, TomTom, MotionX, iGO, GlobalNav, MapQuest, Google and others. I tried them all - and in one way or another, they all suck. Why? Because the iPhone is primarily a mobile phone and an iPod. When an SMS message comes in, or a Facebook alert, or a Calendar alert, or a phone call, it either distracts or switches away from GPS navigation. Not a good idea when driving, far less when driving in unfamiliar areas!!!Convergence in GPS mapping systems is completely understandable. Magellan,...
Garmin's nuvi 1450LMT is Outstanding
Researching GPS devices was and is worse than buying a car with all the different product offerings and features plus none of the model numbering seems to make sense which was even more frustrating. You can't tell a low end unit from a high end unit. Garmin is no different either.Through all of that I am very pleased that I settled on the Garmin 1450. IMO Garmin has made a wonderful device. The UI is very intuitive and very easy to operate even with my big hands. The touch screen is very accurate and responsive. From power up to satelite acquisiiton takes seconds. The turn by turn instructions are very clear but a bit too chatty. We have found the street name pronunciations fairly entertaining. The points of interest have been pretty accurate as has the gas station mapping and the hospitals and such. The bread and butter of a GPS is really whether it can get you where you need to go especially if you as the operator have no idea. I have travelled outside my area of...

GPS for Dummies not so dumb
I bought this GPS for Dummies last year and have been pleased with it's performance. It does take a moment for it to acquire a satellite signal. After signal is acquired, it keeps the connection quite well. I like that it also has a media player for playing my music through my car stereo although you have to use WMA music files...easily converted from MP3. Plus there is a a picture and video viewer. Quite nice for the mere price of $70.00 which I found this player on sale for at, of all places, CVS store. Also, for this price, it has voice navigation and/or displayed turn-by-turn routing. It quickly re-routes if you stray from original route. One note of information is that I don't see a choice to avoid tolls but I found that choosing the "quickest" (as opposed to the "shortest") route function did avoid local tolls...maybe because it knows that stopping for tolls actually adds time to route. I haven't had any product problems and it has been reliable so far. Overall, I recommend this...
Absolutely Love this thing
Due to our past experience with this item, I am currently on line now to buy one for my father to take on a cross country trip.My husband, who was a GPS newbie bought one and was able to use it right out of the box. Instruction Manual? What is this instruction manual thing you speak of? He don't need no stinkin' manual. And acutally he didn't. He then thought he was a GPS pro, so he gave this to my brother, who loves it, and bought a garvin because he wanted a larger screen. Big mistake. He pawned the garvin off on my neice and bought a tom-tom because he needed it the next day and couldn't find another Dummies GPS locally at 8:45 pm on a saturday. He still misses his dummies gps very much wants to pawn the tom-tom off on me so he can get another Dummies GPS with the larger screen. Not gonna' happen slick.
not to bad, but could be better
The FD-220 system is functional, the satellite response could be faster. There is no menu button for quick access to the main screen, and the POI function is not easily accessible. However, it comes with a suction cup car mount, usb cable, and car-power adapter. This device is great for the novice gps user. The system calls out street names and allows the user to bypass roads if they chose. Overall a decent GPS unit for a decent price; not too fancy but good enough.

Two things you need to know about the 1300T
The Garmin 1300T is a nice GPS navigation device with the usual features, plus the additional great feature of FREE lifetime traffic information. But there are two things you need to know about the traffic information feature. First, in order for it to work, the device needs to be connected to the charger, and the charger needs to be plugged into the car cigarette lighter. This is because the antenna receiving the traffic info is located on the charger wire. The traffic information feature will not work if the device not connected to the car through the charger. Second, the traffic information feature also provides advertising - the advertisers are apparently the ones who are paying Garmin and the traffic system so that you can have free traffic info. The advertisements show up on a small line at the bottom right of the screen when the device is in the traffic info mode (which is a separate display from the navigation mode). Note of this is explained in the very brief quick-start...
Great GPS Navigation!
I have had this going on a month now and find it to be one of the best, if not THE best GPS Vehicle Nav I have come across. I've several handhelds of various names as well, but in sticking with the scope of this review, I will only mention my previous experience with the vehicle GPS units.I've had just about every brand name of GPS unit in search of the "perfect" one. Up until now, the closest I came was with a Nuvi 350 when it was first released in 05, which I foolishly sold as I wasn't using it as much as I had originally thought. Back then, GPS Nav was a nicety and not nearly as "big" as it is today. Since then, I've had units from Magellan, Cobra, Finedrive (Ugh!), Whistler, TomTom, Mio(My favorite TeleAtlas based brand) and Navigon. All had their plusses and minuses but, never really hit that sweet spot. With the exception of one small detail, the 1300 FINALLY gets it.I can't tell you how happy I am to be back to a Navtech based device. While TeleAtlas...
Good GPS among this price range
First of all, I am a MAP guy. I like paper maps, Paper maps at my local AAA and they have gotten me to my destination for years without problems. That said, I work in the transportation industry as a dispatcher. My drivers often claim that they can not find a street because it does not show up on their GPS. This is because they do not enter the information correctly. Street numbers, Street spelling are very important with all GPS receivers.I have traveled to the Sierra foothills to the local drives in the San Francisco bay area. The free traffic alerts are pretty accurate. The GPS navigation routes are pretty direct and good. When I take my own route or a turn, it recalculates quickly and gives me the direction to where I need to go. Satellite acquisition is quick and have never had a problem with it. The points of interest are nice to find post offices, restaurants, and other stores. Has the option to spell out the particular name of the retail outlet you may be looking...

GTM20 end parts
Great service, great parts. Repaired cable for Garmin Nuvi760 to its original state. I highly recomend this replacement parts kit for the GTM20 cable. Thank You Amazon and GPS.
Does NOT work for nuvi 765 . . . .
Despite the description reading that this kit works for the G20 car charger/FM transmitter, it does NOT work for the nuvi 765T, and perhaps not any units in the 700 series.
Works with GDB 50 (MSN Direct Reciever) too!
Somewhere along the way, all the bits and pieces fell off the end of my GDB 50 (the soon-to-be-JUST-a-charger MSN Direct Receiver that came with my Garmin Nüvi 780) and disappeared to wherever things such as this and matching socks go. Like other reviews have stated, there aren't any instructions, but really none are needed. Reassembled the charger in less than 2 minutes. This kit worked great, and for a heck of a lot less than a new power adapter would have cost!
